Ostranauts Steam Workshop

Install Ostranauts Workshop items carefully by recording AppID, version, branch, dependencies, clean saves, and observable results.

The official Ostranauts 1.0 announcement names Steam Workshop, making it a legitimate base-game topic rather than a generic modding assumption. Workshop still needs a careful workflow. An upload has an author, a stated version, dependencies, a change scope, and a save risk. This guide helps you record those boundaries and test one item without confusing a mod result with a vanilla bug.

Verify the item identity

Open the item from the Steam Workshop context for Ostranauts and confirm that it targets base game AppID 1022980. Do not use a soundtrack page, an unrelated game, or an old screenshot as proof that the item is current. Read the item title, author, description, update date, dependencies, branch note, and comments. If the item does not state what it changes, keep it away from a valued campaign until you understand the scope.

Save the item URL and the date you checked it. Workshop pages can change, disappear, or receive a new upload. A guide can point a reader to the source, but it cannot guarantee that a third-party item remains available or compatible.

Prepare a clean test

Close the game, keep a clean save, and record the current branch. The latest official v1.0.0.9 notice mentions a last_stable branch for mod compatibility. That does not mean every Workshop item requires it; it means branch is an input you must record. Read the item’s own notes before switching. Never use your only campaign save as the first test of an unknown upload.

If the item changes data files or adds a dependency, record the file or item name and the expected behavior. A screenshot of the current vanilla state helps when a result is visual. Keep the change narrow so the next launch can tell you whether the item is active.

Test the advertised change

Use a short action loop that matches the item’s description. Inspect the relevant menu, part, data entry, or Workshop status; perform one action; then compare the observed result with the expected result. If the item changes a ship part, test that part in a disposable save. If it changes a UI label, verify the exact screen rather than assuming the whole game changed.

Do not combine the item with a ship rebuild, branch change, and manual edit. If the test fails, remove or disable the item using the documented route, restore the clean state, and record the error. A clear failure report helps the author and protects the wiki from claiming that an untested item works.

Manage saves and updates

Keep modded saves visibly separate from vanilla saves. A game update can change the data or code that an item expects, and an author may update the upload without preserving an older behavior. Check the item page again before loading a valued save after a patch. If compatibility is uncertain, use a copy and report the branch and version rather than guessing.

The official 1.0 announcement also says that plain-text data files can be used for modding. Workshop distribution does not make those data assumptions universal. A manual edit and a Workshop item can interact, so isolate them when troubleshooting.

Write a useful compatibility report

If an item fails, report the Workshop URL or exact item name, author, checked date, game version, branch, save type, dependencies, and the first visible error. Say whether the result occurred on a clean launch and whether disabling the item restored the old behavior. This information is more useful than a one-word “broken” label and gives the author a chance to reproduce the same scope.
